 Indian Rebound
INDIAN REBOUND – Fri, July 1 | 8PM at Cake Shop
Talk about starting them young! Ethan Levenson & John Kallen of Indian Rebound are in High School, yet they’ve already come up with a winning formula and are a year into rocking up and down the NYC circuit. Levenson plays guitar and sings, and Kallen manages the drums. Continue reading Weekend Music Picks

The legal wranglings over what really happened between club patrons and police officers Tuesday night at Tammany Hall are continuing downtown. The Lo-Down’s Ed Litvak is on the scene, and reports that two of the five defendants charged, Cynthia Rosa and Jade Everette, have been released on bail. The fate of the remaining three, Gabriel Diaz, Jessy Ayala and Lewis Pena, is still being decided. Supporters have dubbed them “the Monumental Five,” taking the name from the Smif-N-Wessun/Pete Rock CD whose release party was the origin of the riot.
During a hearing this morning, defense attorney Kenneth Montgomery painted a picture of NYPD officers storming, unprovoked, into a crowded but peacefully uneventful hip-hop show in the mammoth club at 152 Orchard St.

Kenneth Montgomery, the lawyer for the "Monumental Five" defendants, gave interviews outside the courthouse this morning.
The three men and two women arrested in Tuesday night’s riot outside Tammany Hall music club on Orchard Street are facing a judge in a downtown courtroom this morning, while their supporters are organizing a protest there.
The brawl between the NYPD and fans of hip hop acts Smif-N-Wessun and Pete Rock, much of which was captured on video by bystanders, sent five police officers to the hospital, but also drew outcries of police brutality from club patrons and musicians. The fountain sent a cool mist across the Sol Lain Playground on Henry Street yesterday afternoon. Today’s weather will be even sunnier than yesterday, with clear skies and highs in the mid-80s. Today, we’ll be following up on the stories we’ve been covering this week, some updates on bar and restaurant news and our music picks for the long holiday weekend.
Beer or wine with that braseola panini? Gaia Cafe seeks a permit.
The agenda for the July meeting of the Community Board 3 SLA Committee is out, and there are requests from a few local establishments worth noting:
- Gaia Italian Cafe, 251 E. Houston St., is seeking a beer and wine license. This cafe, run by recent Italian immigrant Gaia Bagnasacco and stocked with shipments of meat and cheese imported weekly from her home country, has gained many loyal patrons in the community since opening in February.
- Mexicue, 106 Forsyth St., is seeking a beer and wine license. As we reported earlier this month, the Mexican/barbecue fusion food truck is going brick and mortar in the LES later this year; its owners signed a 10-year-lease for a 2,000-square-foot restaurant between Grand and Broome streets. Another Mexicue is also slated for Midtown West, set to open next month.
- Cheeky Sandwiches, 35 Orchard St., is seeking a beer and wine license. Proprietor Din Yates brought New Orleans po’ boys and other Southern fare to the LES in early 2010, and just announced plans to expand to Brooklyn’s DeKalb Market.
- Saro, 102 Norfolk St., is seeking to upgrade its beer and wine permit to a full liquor license. This tiny bistro, which showcases Balkan food, has worked hard to establish itself in the neighborhood since opening in November.
The meeting takes place Monday, July 18, at the JASA/Green Residence, 200 E. 5th St. at 6:30 p.m.
Police have charged a Brooklyn man in connection with the chaos that erupted during a hip-hop concert at Tammany Hall music club and spilled out into a riot on Orchard Street last night.
Gabriel Diaz, 27, of 244 Bond St., Brooklyn, was charged with two felonies: assault and rioting, according to police. He was also charged with three misdemeanor offenses: obstructing a governmental administration, resisting arrest and inciting to riot; as well as two less-serious violations, disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana.
In all, five people were arrested at the scene, which filled the block of Orchard between Rivington and Stanton with police sirens, flashing lights and shouting shortly after midnight. The NYPD has not released details on the other four individuals taken into custody.
We’ve reached out to Tammany Hall owner Jason Baron to hear the club’s side of the story, but haven’t heard from him yet.
 Summer Rolls from Carlin Greenstein
LES resident and locavore chef Carlin Greenstein is contributing a weekly seasonal recipe based on fresh food you can find at local markets or in your CSA. This week, she shares a recipe for summer rolls (Siamese Rolls) that combines raw and cooked ingredients:
I own a very worn and well-loved copy of a cookbook called, The Balanced Plate by Renee Loux. A couple of weeks ago I was delighted to partake in a class she taught called Raw Integration, which brings together both raw and cooked elements to make a dish or a meal.

Orchard Street in front of Tammany Hall is quiet this morning, but last night was a different story.
An event that began as a hip-hop CD release party at Orchard Street nightclub Tammany Hall yesterday evening ended with blood on the sidewalk, the arrest of half a dozen patrons and at least five police officers injured in the wee hours of the morning.
Ten minutes after midnight, NYPD officers responded to a call for help from security staffers at the club, who reported a dispute among patrons that had grown unruly during the show, according to the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information office, which compiled a preliminary report this morning. Officers arrived to find a large crowd outside the club, and proceeded to arrest one person for disorderly conduct. The suspect fought back, striking an officer in the face and breaking a front tooth, according to DCPI. The suspect then allegedly called for help from other patrons inside and outside the club as officers began to clear out the over-capacity space.
