New Neighbor: Plank Pilates Studio, 187 Chrystie Street

Must Read

Plank Pilates Studio, 187 Chrystie Street.

Today we debut a new feature, “New Neighbor,” our virtual welcome for businesses and non-profit organizations setting up shop on the Lower East Side. It’s an opportunity for owners and operators to describe in their own words what what their ventures are all about. If you’re new to the neighborhood and are interested in being featured send us an email at tips@thelodownny.com.

Here’s Matthew Wadiak of Plank Pilates Studio:

WHAT: Plank Pilates Studio is a new Boutique Pilates Studio with a focus on Tower Classes and Private Sessions.  Plank provides multiple Tower Classes everyday showcasing the finest handmade classical solid maple machines and talented, encouraging instructors.

WHERE: Situated in a building constructed in 1869 at 187 Chrystie Street, between Rivington and Stanton, Plank Pilates Studio is truly one of a kind.   Plank showcases a classic tenement space on the Lower East Side and has been restored beyond its original condition over a century ago.  Antique wood floors and original stone walls accent a simple, modern decor, while the minimalist design highlights Plank’s no-nonsense focus on an invigorating workout.  This full gut renovation was over a year in the making leaving no detail unturned in this highly unique space.

WHO: I am a long time resident of the Lower East Side, Chef and Fitness Advocate.  A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, I spent the last six years working as a Private Chef in NYC after working at several esteemed restaurants in both Italy and California.  Along with eating well and a focus on a nutritious and a well balanced diet, exercise has always been a priority for me.  The contractor, George Hoeg, is an artist, designer and LES resident whose work shows an exceptional attention to detail that is seldom seen.

WHY: As a chef it may seem a bit funny or strange to open a Pilates Studio on the LES but I guess it all just came together.  I love food and I love fitness and although I am certainly not an expert in Pilates, I have surrounded myself with people who are and I learn more every day.   The mind-body results I have witnessed through this practice are truly amazing. When the space became available over a year ago I envisioned a simple Pilates Studio.  But as the project progressed, myself and George, the contractor and now part owner, fell in love with the antiquity of the space and decided that we really wanted to put our hearts into this project. Not just another ho-hum workout space but something from us. To me this is not just a business, it’s a place for people to gather and improve a part of their lives, meet, talk, have a tea, and just relax.

WHEN: Plank is open every day! Monday-Friday 7am-9pm; Saturday-Sunday 10am-4pm. Classes can be reserved online at www.plankpilates.com.
