The Juneteenth Legacy Theatre company brings “A Night With Pearl Cleage’s Women,” to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe for a three-week run. They write: Rewind to 1898 when freed slaves claimed Nicodemus, Kansas as their new home, and to 1930, when Harlem was the center for black artistic freedom.
The piece is an adaptation of scenes from Atlanta-based writer Pearl Cleage’s Flyin West and Blues For An Alabama Sky. It follows an ensemble of women from her plays who tell their stories of “love, betrayal, revenge and redemption.”
Cleage is an award-winning playwright and author whose novels have been on many best selling lists, including The New York Times. Her play, Flyin’ West, was the most produced new play in the country in 1994. She is among the few black playwrights consistently produced in American theaters.
The show is directed by Rome Neal, curator of Banana Puddin Jazz at the Nuyorican. Performances run Thursdays through Saturdays, March 31st – April 16th.
