CB3 Panel Rejects Mamajuana Team’s Plans for Old Tonic Space

Last night, the guys behind Mamajuana, who want to open a version of a popular Inwood restaurant in the old “Tonic” space, had a rough time before Community Board 3′s SLA Committee.  The panel voted 5-3 to deny their request for a new liquor license at 107 Norfolk, a building that has been idled since the popular music venue was closed three years ago.

CB3 cited a number of concerns, including reports from Washington Heights about noise complaints at the uptown location. David Cook, a longtime LES resident, said he was worried about crowd control and traffic backups on Norfolk, a narrow street that’s already home to several establishments (Schiller’s, the Back Room, Nurse Betty). L.E.S. Lit: A Super Sad Love Story (on Grand Street)

As you may have heard, The Lo-Down is co-sponsoring this fun event at the Educational Alliance on Wednesday.  Writers Gary Shteyngart and Joanna Smith Rakoff happen to be friends from college and share a love of the Lower East Side. Their conversation will be moderated by New York Magazine writer, Michael Idov, who also wrote an L.E.S.-centric novel, Ground Up. We thought we’d offer an excerpt from Mr. Shteyngart’s book, Super Sad True Love Story, which is particularly relevant as it references, in loving and hilarious detail, our beloved neighborhood. Make sure to register for the event here. Continue reading L.E.S. Lit: A Super Sad Love Story (on Grand Street)

Talking Turkey with Jeffrey

Don’t let that big knife scare you. Essex Street Market butcher Jeffrey Ruhalter will be happy to help you prepare for Thanksgiving, which is only 10 days away. We stopped by over the weekend to learn about some of the options available for the big feast.

Here’s the scoop:

If you want a fresh, all-natural turkey (from an Amish farm in Pennsylvania), you’ll need to get your order in no later than the end of the day tomorrow.

But if you just need a regular fresh or frozen turkey, there’s still time. Jeffrey says you can order those varieties up until Monday or Tuesday of next week.  What’s the price difference? The all-natural bird will cost you around $4.75/pound — $2.29 or so for a regular fresh turkey — and $1.99 for frozen.

Lower East Side BID Invites Community to Grand Opening

The LES Business Improvement District moved into new offices at 54 Orchard Street several months ago.  On Tuesday, November 23rd, they’re inviting the community to an official unveiling of the new headquarters, which includes a Visitor Center.  There will, of course, be food and drink. Elected officials, including Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, will be in attendance. And you’ll be able to meet the BID’s new staff members: Executive Director Bob Zuckerman, Marketing Director Tim Lemberger and Community Relations Manager Tim Laughlin. The grand opening will be held from 5-8pm.  54 Orchard is located between Grand and Hester.

CB3 Committee Endorses Plan for Beefed Up Nightlife Security

Earlier this week, Community Board 3′s public safety committee unanimously approved a proposal from the LES Business Improvement District to hire off-duty cops for beefed up nightlife enforcement. The full board will decide whether to endorse the committee’s recommendation at its monthly meeting, November 23rd.

Bob Zuckerman, the BID’s executive director, told me yesterday the proposal is not a reflection of the effectiveness of the 7th Precinct in dealing with nightlife issues. Instead, he said, the supplementary security officers would provide an added service to bar owners and neighbors, who have increasingly found themselves at odds over late night noise noise and unruly crowds. Scenes From the Neighborhood

L.E.S. Street

Photographer Stephen Spera sent us these lovely photos after a bike ride through the L.E.S.  Here’s what he had to say:

I took a long bike ride through the LOWER EAST SIDE today. Incredible and embarrassing, as I live FOUR blocks from it….or  IN it, according to your point of view. The geography shifts daily, as do many things in New York. I particularly went in search of the old Hasidic LES, where decades of gorgeous decay turned signage into art.  SO much was gone, I couldn’t believe it. Continue reading Scenes From the Neighborhood
