Elected officials and neighborhood activists rallied in Chatham Square yesterday, urging voters to go to the polls tomorrow. Among those taking part in an afternoon rally: State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, State Senator Daniel Squadron and City Councilmember Margaret Chin.
Silver is up for re-election but is running unopposed. Squadron has a Republican opponent (Joseph Nardello) but in the 25th Senatorial District (Lower Manhattan/Brooklyn), he isn’t exactly sweating bullets. There is a lot of concern, however, that Democrats will not maintain control of the State Senate, in a tough political year.
Yesterday, the three elected officials encouraged voters to back U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo, Eric Schneiderman for State Attorney General, and Tom DiNapoli for Comptroller.
Also on the ballot Tuesday: a controversial term limits proposal, which Chin supports. As you may recall, her predecessor (Alan Gerson) sided with Bloomberg in his successful campaign to extend term limits and run for a third term. Ironically, Bloomberg supports the ballot measure. Other organizations, including Citizens Union and downtown political clubs, are urging voters to reject the proposal. They believe the initiative, crafted by the mayor’s Charter Review Commission, is ill-conceived, and should be reworked.
