In the news, “glitches and grumbles” overshadowed the debut of new Select Bus Service along 1st & 2nd Avenues yesterday. The Post looks at the legal battle surrounding an apartment on East 2nd Street, which according to the owner’s brother, was occupied by “two squatters” who caused $70,000 in damage. Gamma Blog posted a video from a weekend memorial for LES activist/squatter Michael Shenker.
Other interesting items this morning: Reshma Saujani, former Congressional candidate, is blogging for WNYC. The Observer hangs out with Pulino’s chef Nate Appleman as he butchers a pig. Rosario Dawson is getting the word out about the LES Girls Club’s groundbreaking gala (October 19) , honoring Mary Spink and Howard Hemsley.
Coming up today, it was a bittersweet beginning to this year’s season of the Sol Lain Football League. After the loss of beloved LES coach Eddie Garcia, Saturday’s kickoff held special meaning for kids and adults alike. We’ll also report on the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation’s next round of community grants – up to $17 million available to community groups.
