Ping Pong and Planting: Creating Community in Gulick Park

Last weekend, 150 or so Lower East Side residents gathered in Luther Gulick Park for “It’s My Park Day.”  The event was part of a community-based campaign to revitalize the park, at the corner of Willett and Delancey streets.  One of the highlights was a hotly contested ping pong tournament. We asked Kim Gledhill, the tournament’s organizer and Friends of Gulick Park member, to share her thoughts on the big day: Continue reading Ping Pong and Planting: Creating Community in Gulick Park

Cigar Shop, Maraya, “Soft” Opens in Old Guss’ Storefront

Maraya, the cigar shop replacing Guss’ Pickles at 87 Orchard, is now open for business. We stopped by a short time ago to visit with partners Kevin Joyce and Joy Florentz. There’s still some work to be done (an entryway is coming next week) — but starting today they’re selling two varieties of hand-crafted cigars made in the Dominican Republic. They installed their first two humidors today. Continue reading Cigar Shop, Maraya, “Soft” Opens in Old Guss’ Storefront

LES Gallery Openings on All Hallows Eve

Not only are millions of people waltzing around the city adorned as some fantasy creature, but the city is actually pulsing from the sheer energy of the vivacious crowds about to run amok on Halloween. Before heading out tonight to join in this year’s festivities, I recommend you make a few vital gallery pit stops.

The first place to check out is Jen Bekman Gallery (6 Spring Street). The opening for California born artist Jessica Snow’s show “Multiple Plot Points” will be in full swing from 6PM until 8PM. Snow’s use of vibrant colors and shapes that drape diligently across linen surfaces make fascinating images that hint at spectacular topographies and unique landscapes. The artist has said of her artwork: “Like cities and dreams, the internal logic (or non-logic) of painting is structured upon absurd rules and deceitful perspectives.” The backbone of this particular series especially lends itself to the relationship of art, urban planning, and psychology that Snow speaks of.

Dawson, Officials Celebrate Girls Club Groundbreaking

Photo by William Alatriste, New York City Council.

It’s safe to say no other neighborhood organization does “photo ops” quite as well as the Lower East Side Girls Club. Today, however, was a special occasion. This morning, Girls Club supporters came to 101 Avenue D to celebrate a big achievement — the beginning of construction on the group’s new 30,000 sq/ft headquarters.

Lots of elected officials were there, including Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Councilmember Rosie Mendez, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, State Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh and State Senator Daniel Squadron.  Of more interest to the pack of photographers elbowing their way through the construction site: LES native and longtime Girls Club supporter Rosario Dawson, who emceed the event. The New Museum has announced it’s replacement for the “Hell Yes” sculpture by Ugo Rondinone that has donned the facade of the building since it’s opening in 2007.  “Rose II,” a twenty-eight foot tall stainless steel and aluminum rose designed by German artist Isa Genzken, will be installed on the facade beginning tomorrow.  The piece will be Isa Genzken’s first public sculpture in New York and is scheduled to be fully installed by the end of November.

Cops Shut Down Santos Party House

The New York Press follows up on a story Brooklyn Vegan first reported last night, the shuttering of Santos Party House:

Last night, Chinatown nightlife fixture Santos Party House was closed by cops thanks to “criminal sale or possession of controlled substances,” ruining the Ninja Tune anniversary party—and that might just be the beginning. With big events this weekend, including the Halloween night live show, record-release party and first annual Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black Halloween Bazaar, whether or not the club will be open is unclear. (Check out photos here). We’ve reached out to folks at Santos to find out more and will update accordingly.

Weekend Music Picks

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side this weekend:

Kelley McCrae

KELLEY MCRAE – Friday, Oct. 29 | 11pm at The Living Room

With a solid background in travel and heartbreak, Kelley Mcrae writes songs that connect with the listener on the most human of levels. Her strong, clear voice delivers the words of someone who understands the source of some of our more primal emotions. They’re not all sad songs, but they are sung sadly, and that tends to make them register more deeply as you listen.  $7 // 154 Ludlow Street
