Good Morning: Primary Day, Loew’s Canal Landmarking, “The Local” Debuts

Must Read

Carolyn Maloney, Reshma Saujani

It’s primary day in New York.  One of the highest profile races in the state is centered in the 14th Congressional District, which includes sections of the Lower East Side.  Political observers are looking closely at Reshma Saujani’s run against Rep. Carolyn Maloney, as a barometer of the potency of the anti-incumbent backlash this year.

The biggest story today may concern how voters adapt to those fancy new voting machines. If you need an election day primer, Gotham Gazette has a good summary of what’s at stake. Click here if you need to find your polling location.

In other news, the Landmarks Preservation Commission is expected to vote in favor of protecting the facade of the Loew’s Canal Theater. We’ll have details once the commission has weighed in this afternoon. The MTA’s first public hearing on the next round of proposed fare hikes took place last night at Cooper Union. Not many people showed up.  The New York Times and NYU debuted their new East Village, student-run blog. Each day the Village Voice will be “grading” the “hyperlocal slave labor experiment.”  Among yesterday’s revelations: Reshma Saujani eats Indian food in the East Village.

“The Local” did not cover yesterday’s announcement from the Parks Department that new rules for community gardens have been finalized.  But the real “Times” got on the case today, reporting that some community groups have reservations about the rules, which were revised after neighborhood activists pushed for stronger protections against development.

EV Grieve has an update on the Sin Sin saga, including a plea from neighborhood activist Stuart Zamsky for residents to attend next week’s 9th Precinct Community Council meeting. Zamsky says it’s an opportunity to tell the NYPD about the murder and mayhem going on outside the 5th Street club.  Bowery Boogie reports the owner of a new cigar shop on Orchard Street is selling off the old Guss’ Pickles signage.  DNA Info checked out the scene outside Cake Shop, where Spoon played a midday show yesterday.

The Times profiles digital music pioneer Richard Gottehrer, whose business has its roots on Orchard Street. Guest of a Guest talks up the return of “On the Bowery” at the Film Forum this weekend.

78 degrees and mostly sunny today. Our next chance for rain is on Thursday.
