Hot and breezy today with a high of 92. Recently we walked the neighborhood with the staff of the LES Jewish Conservancy. We’ll have that story today. Tonight’s the Collect LES Art Crawl, which includes almost 30 galleries and special discounts at lots of shops and bars. Whatever you’re doing today and tonight, try to stay cool.

Rona Economou knew she didn’t want to be a lawyer all her life. So when she was laid off from her job as a litigator in December, it didn’t take her too long to figure out that what she really wanted to do was run a restaurant.

Members of the Chinatown Working Group (CWG) were being asked to approve a fairly routine document — a job description of sorts for an urban planning consultant who will begin working with the organization later this year. But last night, at the American Legion meeting room on Canal Street, the proceedings became complicated and contentious in a hurry.

The ongoing debate about the future of the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area revolves around the issue of affordable vs. market rate housing. But during Community Board 3′s deliberations, other topics., such as the need for new schools and cultural facilities, have been raised, if only briefly. According to John Shapiro (a consultant hired by the city to work with CB3), the Department of Education doesn’t believe a new school should be a priority in the SPURA development plan. And speaking of heated, the latest from fire-ravaged 289 Grand, where displaced tenants and the landlord are entangled in a contentious legal battle.
