Must Read

There is plenty of fun in the sun to be had – with a variety of block parties, fairs and markets – on and around the Lower East Side this weekend. Grab your sunscreen and join the community on the streets!

  • The New Museum’s Block Party 2010, is tomorrow in Sara D. Roosevelt Park. They will offer up a day of “interactive projects with artists and educators, and programs related to the neighborhood and the New Museum.”  Highlights include: Poet and storyteller Pappa Susso presented by the Bowery Poetry Club, Beatboxer Adam Matta, 2:30 p.m., Urbana Poetry Slam, presented by the Bowery Poetry Club, and a musical performance by Hisham Akira Bharoocha (mentioned in our Music Picks this week). // FREE // 12-5p // Below Delancey at Chrystie Street.
  • The New Amsterdam Market is back down on South Street (between Beekman St. and Peck Slip) this Saturday with over 50 local food vendors selling regional products, not to mention a pre-made picnic assembled by Marlow & Daughters. // FREE // 11am – 4pm.
  • As part of the Hester Street Fair’s Zero Waste Weekend, The Lower East Side Ecology Center and Assemblyman Shelly Siliver’s office are co-sponsoring electronics recycling. Residents, small businesses and non-profits are all welcome to drop off electronics they plan to throw away. // FREE //  Saturday, July 24, and Sunday, July 25th // 10a-6p // Corner of Essex St. and Hester St.
  • It’s the third (and last) weekend of Stanton Street Summer Sundays. The L.E.S. B.I.D. presents an afternoon of free family friendly activities on Stanton Street (between Allen and Ludlow). This Sunday’s line-up includes a visit with the NYC Fire Department, belly dancing lessons and a live musical performance by the Lower East Side’s lady of laughs, Jessica Delfino. // FREE // 12-5pm.
