International Women Artists' Salon Hosts Lit Reading

The International Women Artists’ Salon will host a reading this evening  as part of their ongoing showcase, Exhibition One: Zero Gravity, that is happening at Lolita Bar through June 30th. Founder Heidi Russel writes, “Please join us to hear bits of memoir, poetry & other choice narratives written and read by members of the International Women Artists’ Salon: Morgan Avery Sispoidis, Felice Cohen, Liz Gold, Janet Iacobuzio, Emily Johnson, Christa Krenek, Denise Linville, Ashley Roberts, and Rose Santos-Cunningham. CB3 Discusses Charter Review Concerns Tonight

As you may know, the New York Charter Review Commission is now weighing potential changes in the way the city is governed.  Their deliberations could lead to ballot proposals impacting term limits, the powers of city officials (including borough presidents, the public advocate and the comptroller) and the role of New York’s 59 community boards.

Tonight, Community Board 3 will debate what issues to advocate for during the charter revision process. This evening’s meeting will focus specifically on how to maintain (and strengthen) the community boards’ influence in citywide decision-making.

Dixon Place Announces 2010 Hot! Festival Lineup

Dixon Place has announced the line-up for their 19th annual Hot! Festival. Dubbed “The Best Gay Theater Festival in New York” by The Village Voice, the schedule packs in 60 Shows over 6 weeks, with over 150 LGBTQ artists presenting theatre, dance, music, literature, and performance art.  For the full line-up visit the Hot! The Whiz:Obamaland Comes to Abrons

The Nicholas Leichter Dance Company and musical mix master Monstah Black have joined forces to create their version of The Wiz and The Wizard of Oz for the Obama generation. The show arrives at Abrons Arts Center tonight and features choreography by Leichter, a commissioned score by Black and added musical selections – showcasing an array of different dance, performance, and music.  $20 // 8pm // Weds., June 16th – Sat., June 19th // 466 Grand St.

Fighting to Save City Services

Last week's City Hall rally to save after school programs.

As the haggling continues in Albany over the state’s budget, members of the City Council are gearing up for the big fights ahead once it becomes clear what programs will be cut and how deeply.  It’s been clear for months now that all kinds of services – senior centers, after school programs, schools, fire houses, – will be hit hard.  This week, the state narrowly averted a government shutdown.  And lawmakers have now agreed to vote on portions of the budget (transportation, public safety, economic development).

Good Morning!

We stopped by P.S. 134′s outdoor classroom yesterday for a garden party. Kids joined Councilmember Maragret Chin, the Hester Street Collaborative and Con-Ed (one of the program’s corporate sponsors) to celebrate the transformation of the once neglected space.  We may see some rain showers this morning before the sun peaks out in the afternoon. A high of 77.

State Orders Owner of 128 Hester to Pay Tenants $1 Million

Affordable housing advocates believe a recent ruling from the State of New York ordering a Chinatown building owner to pay more than a million dollars to the former residents of 128 Hester Street has broad implications.

On Friday, State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, State Senator Daniel Squadron, the advocacy organization, Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) and Community Board 3 heralded the decision requiring hotel developer William H. Su to compensate nine families displaced when the tenement building was declared unsafe and demolished last year.

Pride Goes East to Host Week Long Shop-a-Thon

Pride Goes East, a collaboration between Fourth Arts Block and the Lower East Side BID, is wrapping up it’s month-long performance celebration with a Lower East Side “shop-a-thon” with special events during Pride Week beginning this Saturday. Participating business will offer special deals throughout the week and a portion of all purchases will be donated to the Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk School.

Bicycle Film Festival Kicks Off Tenth Anniversary

The Bicycle Film Festival will kick off it’s tenth anniversary tomorrow night with a big celebration at Santos Party House.  Founder and festival director Brendt Barbur was compelled to start the festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City in 2001. The festival celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film (and is now considered to have been a catalyst for the urban bike movement). Acting Jewish - Lecture at the Museum at Eldridge St.

In a lecture accompanied by music and video clips, University of Toronto Professor Andrea Most (author of Making Americans: Jews and the Broadway Musical) will explore the relationship between Jews and their active involvement in American entertainment. Chinatown Safety & Crime Prevention Event Tomorrow

Tomorrow afternoon at 2pm the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and the NYPD and the New York City District Attorneys Office are sponsoring a crime prevention seminar. Experts will offer advice on how to avoid becoming a crime victim. There will be Chinese-language brochures available.  It will be held at CCBA Headquarters, 62 Mott Street.
