There is plenty going on here on the Lower East Side this weekend. Here are some highlights:
New Design High School will present their 2010 “Rooftop Legends” show on Saturday with an opening reception from 3-7pm. The curated show is a graffiti event that takes place up on the open rooftop of New Design High School (formerly Seward Park) and is a fundraiser for the school. This year’s event will feature crews including: FC, TC5, COD, AOK, FBA, TFP, TPA, TATS CRU and more. Watch our video from last year’s show here. $5 – $25 suggested entry.
As part of their “Ways We Worship” initiative, the Museum at Eldridge Street will host “Jewish Mysticism & the Kabbalah, a Lecture with Dr. Sharon Flatto,” on Sunday. Flatto looks at contemporary culture’s fascination with the kabbalah and Jewish mysticism, and how this ecstatic, esoteric tradition has been, by turns, embraced, incorporated and expunged from American Jewish practice. 11am // FREE // 12 Eldridge St.

Newmindspace (the folks from the giant NYC pillow fight) is hosting a massive Lightsaber Battle in Chrystie Park (at Chrystie and Houston). The event is FREE (but you can reserve your lightsaber to keep for $5) and open to all ages. May the “Force” be with you on Saturday night at 9:00pm.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney will be on hand after the 7:00pm screening of his film, Casino Jack and the United States of Money, tonight at the Sunshine Cinema. The film is a portrait of Washington super lobbyist Jack Abramoff, from his early years as a gung-ho member of the GOP political machine to his final reckoning as a disgraced, imprisoned pariah. Gibney illuminates the way our politicians’ desperate need to get elected, and the millions of dollars it costs, may be undermining the basic principles of American democracy.

Also at the Sunshine this weekend, in case you’re wondering, the Midnight Movie is Kevin Smith’s Clerks. (Friday and Saturday at midnight, the shows are just $9.99.)
