Silver Weighs in on Future of 289 Grand

Today State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is out with a statement on 289 Grand, a building heavily damaged in last month’s 7-alarm fire. Last week the landlord had notified residents their leases were being terminated, asserting there was no other choice but to demolish the building. Hester Street Collaborative Ready for "It's My Park Day"

The Hester Street Collaborative is gearing up for “It’s My Park Day” on Saturday. They sent along the following details:

On Saturday HSC will join organizations all across the city to host an “It’s My Park! Day” on the Allen & Pike Street Pedestrian Malls. It’s My Park! Day is a citywide effort to care for and celebrate New York City’s parks coordinated by Partnerships for Parks. HSC’s partners at Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) and the UNRAP Coalition will join us for a fun, engaging, and productive day on the Malls, which are undergoing significant renovation and revitalization (all based on community input) by the NYC Parks Department and the NYC Department of Transportation.

Alaine Handa: Chameleon at The Performance Project

Choreographer and performer Alaine Handa will be at The Performance Project for three nights starting tonight with her multimedia project, Chameleon. The project is described as combining dance, film, spoken word and visual art to investigate multi-cultural identity and cross-cultural relationships. Rooted in the notion of home, the show draws on the insight and experience of Third Culture Kids: those who have spent a significant period of time in a culture other than their own, creating a new third culture. East Side Streets Coalition at Bluestockings Tonight

The East Side Streets Coalition will be hosting (via Transportation Alternatives) a Lower East Side Workshop tonight at Bluestockings Bookstore (172 Allen Street) at 7pm. They write: Share your thoughts on what makes it difficult to walk or bike in your neighborhood, your vision for improvement and brainstorm solutions using the New York City Street Design Manual. M. Schames & Sons: Crossing Delancey

Back in March, we reported that M. Schames & Sons, the legendary Essex Street paint store, was being forced to relocate. The demolition of their neighbor, 5 Essex, had apparently destabilized a shared exterior wall. A Lo-Down reader noted that the building dates back to 1909.
