Good Morning!

This morning the Landmarks Preservation Commission will consider protecting a few Lower East Side buildings, including the Loews Canal Theater. You can see a portion of the 1927 jewel above (it’s the one in the middle with the shuttered electronics store below). Tonight, CB3 will hold its monthly full board meeting. And the people behind the LES’s new CSA will be holding an informational meeting. Look for a high today of 59 with more showers. We should see the sun again by Thursday.

More on the Relocation of M. Schames & Sons

We just returned from the M Schames & Sons paint store on Essex Street. The Schames family wouldn’t let us take any pictures inside due to the very likely prospect that the ordeal over their building, 3 Essex, will end up in court. We were told they will be set up at 90 Delancey in a few weeks.

Longtime Essex Street Business, M Schames & Son, is Relocating

Photo by A. Jesse Jiryu Davis

A short time ago, we received a tip from a Lo-Down reader that M Schames & Son, a fixture on Essex Street for four generations is moving. We confirmed with the Schames family that they are, in fact, relocating the paint store to 90 Delancey Street. The recent demolition of 5 Essex (next door) apparently destabilized at least one of their walls. We’re going to call back for more information in a few minutes. The owners are in the process right now of dealing with the Department of Buildings and their attorneys.

A check of the DOB’s web site shows a “full vacate order” has been issued for the building, 3 Essex.  According to our tipster, there are large blocks of wood inside the store, stabilizing the north wall. The Schames family owns the building. The photo above was taken recently for our series “On Essex.”

Amigo French Out – Metro Empanadas In

One of our favorite little places in the neighborhood has folded. The Amigo French Cafe was way off the radar, a bit too far off it seems.  This “hole in the wall” on Clinton Street (just below East Broadway) served up really decent burritos, tacos and tortas.  As you an see in the photo above, something called “Metro Empanadas” is opening soon.

Grand Street Settement Plans “Taste of the Lower East Side”

Next month, the Grand Street Settlement will be hosting the 10th annual “Taste of the Lower East Side.” Since the event debuted in 2001, it has grown tremendously. Over a thousand people took part last year, sampling dishes from the best restaurants in the neighborhood. We’re heading over to the Grand Street Settlement later this week to talk with Margarita Rosa, the organization’s executive director. But in the meantime, you can check out the list of restaurants that have already signed up. They’ve also set up a Facebook Page.

Good Morning

The team behind the Hester Street Fair and the Seward Park Co-op took advantage of the nice weather this past weekend to work on the gate leading to the space they’ll be utilizing when the event debuts next month. It’s being rebuilt, mostly by recycling sections of the old fence. Speaking of the weather, we’re in for a couple of days of rain before the sun makes a comeback. Today’s high, 60 degrees. Yesterday, we checked out the first-ever “Art Handlers Olympics.” Look for some amusing photos later today.  This week we’ll take a look at preparations for Passover on the Lower East Side. And we’ll be keeping tabs on budget hearings at City Hall. Have a good week.

The Only Way to Travel...

Not a bad way to see the neighborhood on a spring-like weekend. Thanks to Lo-Down reader Cynthia Lamb for sending along this photo, taken yesterday on Delancey Street. If you have a photo or a story you’d like to share, email us at: tips@thelodownny.com.

Maybe those MTA hearings weren’t so pointless after all. The MTA announced yesterday weekend service on the M22, running from Battery Park City to the LES, will not be eliminated.  Another change impacting commuters in this neighborhood: the M train will replace the V, and, “at its first Manhattan stop, Essex Street, the train would take over the V’s route and travel north to the Forest Hills-71st Avenue stop in Queens. NY Noodletown Shuttered by Health Dept.

Imagine my horror walking by NY Noodletown this afternoon at 430. Having skipped lunch, I had my heart set on some ginger scallion noodles and maybe a serving of roast duck. As I approached, the gate was being lowered. Upon closer inspection, the dreaded DOH edict: CLOSED!

Hoops, High Hopes (and Some Cash) in Gulick Park

Sheldon Silver at Gulick Park this morning

No question about it. This is a great day to play hooky. State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and State Senator Daniel Squadron did just that this morning on the basketball court at Luther Gulick Park on Willett Street. There was, of course, serious business to discuss. But then again, how could the Speaker (a basketball fanatic) pass up a chance to practice his jump shot?
