LES Parents File Complaint Against Dept. of Education

The controversy over the expansion of the Girls Prep Charter School lives on.  This morning, parents from the Lower East Side announced they have filed a formal complaint with New York State’s education commissioner. In a news conference on the steps of City Hall a short time ago, they argued the DOE violated state law by failing to outline how other district schools would be impacted and by disregarding required procedures — and they insisted the decision must be annulled.

Good Morning!

Working on the Williamsburg Bridge. Photo by Joel Raskin.

Look for the rain to continue through tomorrow. The high will hover in the mid-50′s both days. But sunshine is in our future. By Thursday it’ll be in the 70′s.  They’ll be selling lots of horse-radish at the Pickle Guys today. Passover begins this evening. Later today, we’ll have a story on the Grand Street Settlement, which is preparing for the 10th annual “Taste of the Lower East Side.” The controversy over the expansion of the Girls Prep Middle School is apparently not over. We’ll explain what’s going on. Plus, we’ll have details about Marco Polo Weekend, our neighborhood’s newest multi-cultural event.
