A New Men's Clothing Store Coming to Orchard Street

It looks like a new clothing store is coming to lower Orchard Street. New restaurants and clothing boutiques have, of course, transformed this block (between Broome and Grand) in the last few years. We’re told the men’s shop “The Cast,” is busily working on the narrow space at 69 Orchard. This is the Zarin Fabrics building. The new shop is sandwiched between Orchard Street fixtures Howard Sportswear and A.W. Kaufman Designer Lingerie. “The Cast” has another location at 119 Ludlow. No word whether they plan to keep both stores open.

Il Laboratorio del Gelato Plans LES Expansion

This just in from the New York Times: Il Laboratorio del Gelato, the gourmet icecream shrine on Orchard Street, is moving into a huge new space on Ludlow, just below Houston, in June. Owner Jon Snyder tells Florence Fabricant he’s leased a spot at 188 Ludlow (apparently the ground-floor commercial space in the luxury apartment complex. “The Ludlow.”)

The new location will be five times larger than the current sliver of a space on Orchard. Snyder says they’ll be staying open past 6pm, perhaps as late as midnight on weekends. There will be, perhaps, 60 flavors available and about 15 seats.

The Times was told the Orchard location will stay open “at least for the summer.”

City Council to Review Hotel on Rivington's Sidewalk Cafe

The Hotel on Rivington might have to fight to keep its sidewalk cafe.  Yesterday the City Council voted to review the “action of the Department of Consumer Affairs approving an unenclosed sidewalk cafe located at 107 Rivington Street.” In 2007, Community Board 3 opposed the hotel’s original application, saying Rivington is a “narrow street which is already overcrowded by pedestrian and vehicular traffic from… nightlife
establishments…” Their resolution also noted that, when the hotel operators applied for their liquor license, they promised not to add sidewalk seating.

Controversial “Skin Fruit” Opens at The New Museum

Janine Antoni's "Saddle" at The New Museum's "Skin Fruit" exhibition - photo by Traven Rice

I stopped by the New Museum’s controversial exhibit, “Skin Fruit: Seletions from the Dakis Joannou Collection” on Tuesday to see what all the fuss was about.  The exhibit, which is curated by artist Jeff Koons, has been under scrutiny from the art world because Greek billionaire Joannou sits on the museum’s Board of Trustees and is a good friend of Koons (as well as a collector of Koons’ work). City Council Fights MTA Service Cuts

Council members deliver petitions to MTA headquarters (NYCC photo).

As we’ve been reporting, the MTA will hold a public hearing in Manhattan tonight on its proposed service cuts. A similar event last night in Brooklyn got ugly when Police dragged several angry protesters out of the auditorium at the Brooklyn Museum, where the hearing was taking place.

The City Council is doing what it can to fight the service reductions. Here’s Dstrict 1 Councilmember Margaret Chin’s update to constituents:

Followup: Charter Schools, Parental Involvement, DOE Decision Making

Public hearing on Girls Prep expansion proposal, December 2009

Earlier this week, we posted our interview with Michael Duffy, who oversees New York City’s charter schools.  There’s one section in particular that isn’t exactly sitting well with some parents and education activists. During the interview, Duffy expressed his views on a state-mandated public hearing held on the Lower East Side to gather feedback on the controversial expansion of the Girls Prep Charter School. This is what Duffy said:

Good Morning!

We get a break from the rain showers today. It’ll be mostly cloudy with a high of 39. The showers return tomorrow, but Saturday looks promising (high 40′s and lots of sunshine). It’s MTA day in Manhattan. The City Council and advocacy organizations are hoping for a big turnout at tonight’s hearing at the Fashion Institute of Technology on the transit agency’s proposed service cuts.
