Weekend Fun For the Whole Family

This weekend is full of fun family events on the Lower East Side:

Beginning at 10am with the FREE New Museum series, First Saturdays For Families, you can check out the exhibition “Yog Raj Chitrakar: Memory Drawing IX” with artist Nikhil Chopra (above) as he combines theater, portraiture, landscape drawing, photography, and installation to chronicle the world through live performance.

In character as Yog Raj Chitrakar, a Victorian draughtsman, Chopra visited Ellis Island in early November to create large-scale drawings of the city and activated the Lobby Gallery of the New Museum by embodying this 1920s character. Participate in a theater workshop led by New Victory Theater Teaching Artists to create a character using physical presence, voice, and props—all inspired by Chopra’s exhibition and artistic process.

The stars of "What's On Your Plate" - Sadie Hope-Gund and Safiyah Riddle

Also on Saturday, there will be a FREE preview screening at the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural Center of the film “What’s On Your Plate”,  directed by Catherine Gund. The film follows two 11-year-old girls, Sadie and Safiya, on a journey as they take a close look at food systems in New York City and explore their place in the food chain. The organizers are hoping for an audience of LES children, ages 10-15. The screening will start at 3:15pm and will be followed by a family food demonstration and party, hosted by the Sylvia Center.  The film will premiere on The Discovery Channel’s Planet Green that evening at 10pm.  RSVP to: Tanya@aubinpictures.com or 212-274-0551.

Annie Hart (Au Revoir Simone) and Doug Marvin (Dirty on Purpose), of the band Uninhabitable Mansions

To round out your weekend with the kids, head to The Living Room (before the Super Bowl) for an afternoon of music from Kidrockers and free pizza from Two Boots.  This month’s show features two emerging Brooklyn bands, Unihabitable Mansions and Savoir Adore.  Comedians Seth Hertzog and Jordan Carlos will host. Adults must be accompanied by a kid (and vice-versa.) 1pm. Tickets $12 in advance here. $15 at the door.
