The News reports Sheldon Silver gave $5000 to the Working Families Party about a week before…
…the party received a subpoena from the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District seeking information in connection with work done by the WFP’s for-profit arm, Data & Field Services, during the fall elections… The WFP played a big role in helping Silver defeat two primary challengers – his first in more than two decades – back in 2008. The speaker handily defeated his opponents, winning 68 percent of the vote. Silver’s filing shows he hasn’t been too focused on fundraising of late. He started the six-month period with $2.67 million on hand, spent $102,171 and raised just $51250. The speaker has $2.62 million on hand. Silver has continued his relationship with BerlinRosen, the consulting firm he hired for the 2008 primary. The firm is actually his biggest expense, accounting for $60,000 worth of his expenditures.

Our food contributor, Mitch Weinstein, is back this morning with a love letter to an old favorite withstanding the test of time, Momofuku Noodle Bar.
Confession…my Momofuku mojo was, is and will probably always be for Noodle Bar. Back in 2004, eGulleteers (including me) were mostly ecstatic over the new ramen joint in the Eat Village. I’ve remained so, even as Ssam, Ko and Milk Bar have joined the Changpire and been raved about. Back in the day, Chang may have cooked for us…I definitely recall him berating some unlucky newbie cook or waitperson every now and then.

The new chair of the State Liquor Authority, Dennis Rosen, testified before a Senate committee today. His office is out with a press release summarizing his comments. Ordinarily, this is not the sort of thing we’d post in full – but in this case – we think it’s important to give the agency a chance to respond to the avalanche of negative publicity it receives on an almost weekly basis. To be sure, we’ll be bringing you alternative points of view about the SLA’s attempted makeover in the next several days.

Earlier today we learned Tishman Speyer and Black Rock Realty, owners of Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village, have decided to hand over the troubled middle class housing complex to its creditors. Assembly Member Brian Kavanagh is now out with a statement:
The default of Tishman Speyer Properties and BlackRock Realty, the owners of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, on a $16 million mortgage payment back on January 8th has now given way to the more momentous news that these landlords will relinquish the entire property to their creditors.

It’s that time of the month: Community Board 3 has just released the agenda for next month’s meeting of the SLA Committee. Here’s a look at the 36 (!!!) bars and restaurants asking for CB3 to support their applications before the State Liquor Authority. After a relatively placid and blessedly short meeting this month, February’s food fight is shaping up to be an all-night affair. Plenty to chew over here. For now let’s call it “second chances” month. Freeman’s and TPoutine, turned away by CB3 in 2009, will be back for more punishment. See the list after the jump:

This weekly feature spotlights a wide variety of people who live and work on the Lower East Side. If you would like to participate in “My LES”, please email us here.
What do you do?
I run a cafe on Grand Street called Roots & Vines. We opened about 5 years ago and are still going strong, thankfully.
How long have you lived on the LES?
Since 2000. This makes me the ‘old guard’ of the newer contingent that’s moved down here over the last 10 years or so as the LES has gentrified. I love it here…it’s Manhattan but has the neighborhood feel of one of the outer boroughs. I actually know the names of my neighbors.

Last month, I stopped by the 7th Precinct for a chat with Captain Nancy Barry, who took over as commanding officer last spring. It was a quiet afternoon, just before the holidays. Accompanied by Community Affairs Officer Nicky Teo, we sat in a back room, discussing the holiday toy giveaway that was to be held that weekend – and reminiscing about the good ol’ days in New York City’s second smallest precinct. It turns out Barry has some deep roots on the Lower East Side.
