A few interesting items on Community Board 3's December meeting agenda:
- On Monday, December 7th, the Land Use, Zoning & Housing Committee will resume discussions about development of SPURA (the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area). Committee Chair David McWater had threatened to shelve the SPURA debate, but after a heated conversation last week, agreed to place the issue on next month's agenda.
- At this same meeting, there will be discussion about 183 East Broadway, a stalled residential building near the historic Forward Building. The agenda says there will be a "variance request for height and floor area for project." The committee will also weigh whether to endorse the East Bowery Preservation Plan, "to extend the low-rise zoning of west Bowery (in the Little Italy Special District & NoHo Historic District) to the east side."
- On Wednesday, December 9th, the Transportation Committee will hear a briefing from the DOT about the chaos being caused in Lower Manhattan by a large number of tour and charter buses trying to navigate the streets. They have apparently prepared a report addressing "layover options." According to the agenda, the report "considers alternative parking solutions for buses serving Lower Manhattan, including possible use of Pier 42." They'll also hear a request from Eastern Express for "new commuter van service to/from Chinatown at Bowery & Division."
Many of these items are, of course, fairly cryptic. We'll be trying to get more information next week. You can see the full agenda on CB3's web site.

Assembly Speaker, and Grand Street resident, Sheldon Silver, speaking at post office rally last weekend.
We just received the following press release from Rep. Carolyn Maloney's office:
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Borough President Scott Stringer, State Senator Daniel Squadron, Councilwoman Rosie Mendez, Councilwoman-elect Margaret Chin, and Seward Park Co-op President Michael Tumminia today hailed the U.S. Postal Service’s announcement that it is no longer considering closing the Pitt Station Post Office, which is located at 185 Clinton Street on the Lower East Side.
This summer, the USPS revealed that it was studying the possibility of closing Pitt Station and moving the retail services offered there to four other post offices, the closest of which is the Knickerbocker Station, about a half-mile walk away. At that time, the elected officials argued that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for the many senior citizens who live near Pitt Station, most of whom do not own cars, to walk an additional half-mile to the next-closest station. Further, the post office would likely lose revenue to parcel delivery services, banks that issue money orders, mail boxes stores and other competitors. Speaker Silver and Congresswoman Maloney organized a petition drive that collected nearly 1400 signatures from residents supporting the post office.

It was a raucous, tense evening inside the filled-beyond-capacity auditorium of P.S. 20 on Essex Street Wednesday night (see video after the jump). Hundreds of parents came to speak out against the Department of Education’s proposed plans to accommodate the expansion of the Girls Prep Charter School. The crowd was overflowing into the aisles and out into the school’s entryway. People carried signs, chanted, heckled DOE officials and shouted down other parents. The unmistakable message: there’s no room for Girls Prep in any of their schools.

The NYPD and the Chinatown YMCA are hosting an open house at the Two Bridges Community Center today from 4-8pm. At "LES – Home Sweet Home," there will be air hockey, pool, table-tennis and music by DJ Ansel. The staff at the center will also have information about their after school teen program. Plus, the NYPD's PSA4 (Police Service Area) will offer services such as free ID etching for cell phones, ipods and other electronic devices. They'll be issuing "Operation Safe Child" ID cards and have some giveaways. The community center is located at 286 South Street. The entrance is on Clinton, between Cherry and South Street.
Incidentally, the Chinatown YMCA recently learned it has been awarded a contract to run the community center for the next three years. Earlier this year, the New York City Housing Authority cut off funding to many of its facilities, including Two Bridges. The YMCA had been running the center on an interim basis. They are now negotiating a formal contract with NYCHA. We'll have more on their plans for the center after the Thanksgiving holiday.

A city official told the Lower Manhattan Development Committee, residents should not be worried about holding the trial of accused 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in Downtown Manhattan. Committee Chair Alan Gerson said during yesterday's hearing, he did not believe downtown is "an appropriate location for this trial."
The New York State Court of Appeals has thrown out the convictions of two men, imprisoned for 19 years. Danny Colon and Anthony Ortiz were found guilty in a drive-by shooting on the Lower East Side in 1989 that left two men dead. The court found an assistant district attorney misled the jury about the extent of the help she gave to the prosecution’s star witness in exchange for his testimony. The DA is vowing to retry the men.
