Meeting Tonight to Discuss “Thompson LES” Noise

20090526_shangpool_560x240 This evening at 630pm there will be a community meeting to discuss complaints about late night noise from the Thompson LES Hotel on Allen Street. The hotel is home to the rooftop club "Above Allen" and the restaurant "Shang." The club features a rooftop swimming pool (see above).

Representatives from the hotel and the NYPD will be on hand to hear what people in the neighborhood have to say. Until the recession hit Manhattan, there was a boutique hotel building boom downtown. Rather than relying solely on booking guest rooms, the hotels became nightlife destinations — attracting big crowds and late night noise.

In a 2007 interview with the New York Sun, Thompson LES developer Michael Pomeranc downplayed the hotel's impact on its neighbors: "Since this will predominantly cater to people staying in the hotel, it will keep a serene atmosphere in the neighborhood." The meeting will be held in the Raphael Hernandez Community Room at 189 Allen.
