16mm Film Screening: Films by the Brothers Quay

Seward Park Library

192 East Broadway
New York, NY 10002

Tonight’s program will feature three films from the Quay brothers, known for their stop-motion animation and film techniques, influenced by fellow animators as well as writers such as Franz Kafka , Bruno Schulz, and Robert Walser.

Epic of Gilgamesh"1981. 11 minutes

Swift and savage, this short animated film shows a tricycle-riding monster who traps a strange winged creature in his lair. The camera whips back and forth in slashing, aggressive gestures to stunning effect.

Street of Crocodiles"1986. 21 minutes.

A decrepit caretaker enters a museum and, by accident or design, lets a drop of saliva fall into the eyepiece of an ancient peep-show kinetoscope.

Rehearsals for Extinct Anatomies"1988.

13 minutes.

This experimental animation takes the viewer on a non-linear, dreamlike trip into the Quays' surreal world of unusual architectural forms, living skulls, psychedelic patterns and robots made of drafting tools and found objects.
