On Saturday, Mar. 17, the Stanton Street Shul, 180 Stanton Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side, welcomes Yiddishist and cultural scholar Eve Jochnowitz for a talk entitled "Seasoned with Song: Sacred Music of the Ashkenazic Sabbath Meals." All are invited to attend regular services, or a special women's tefillah beginning at 9:30 am, followed by kiddush and the talk, at around 12:15pm.
Shabbat meals and songs are repeatedly cited as being among the chief pleasures and obligations of the Sabbath, codified with the Talmudic injunction that on the Sabbath Jews should eat, drink, discuss Torah, and sing songs. Two traditions connect the Sabbath zmires (Yiddish for "songs") with Sabbath foods: the belief that the songs alone are nourishment, and the mystical tradition that food is itself a form of worship. Jochnowitz's presentation examines some of the surprising cultural phenomena of the genre of zmires, both within and outside their traditional setting.
Eve Jochnowitz is an instructor at the YIVO institute and the Workmen's Circle, where she has been teaching Yiddish language, culture, and literature, Yiddish foodways and dance for 25 years. She received her doctorate in Jewish culinary ethnography in the Performance Studies department at New York University. She has lectured in the US and abroad on food in Jewish tradition, religion, and ritual as well as food in Yiddish performance and popular culture. She blogs in English and Yiddish at inmolaraan.blogspot.com and is the co- host, with Rukhl Schaechter Ejdelman, of Est Gezunterheyt!, a cooking show in Yiddish. A new edition of The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook -- translated, annotated, and adapted for the modern kitchen by Jochnowitz -- was published in 2015. 1
The Stanton Street Shul is a modern Orthodox synagogue, active since 1913 on the Lower East Side. Led by Rabbi Aviad Bodner, it is the home of a vibrant women's tefillah group, which is sponsoring this event. The Stanton Street Shul is known for its inclusivity and warm welcome to all who enter.
